Closer look at motorhome hire prices

Let's get straight to it: how much does it cost to hire a motorhome per night? It's a simple question, but there isn't a simple answer. There are a number of factors that affect the cost of motorhome hire.

There's a saying that bigger isn't always better. And while we agree, it's a general rule of motorhomes that the vehicles with the most berths are usually at the higher end of the luxury scale too. So these tend to cost the most.

Large motorhomes with multiple berths that can sleep a family of four will obviously cost more than smaller motorhomes or campervans for two.

While all our motorhomes and campervans come with on board showers and toilets (except for the VW camper van), our larger motorhomes have a higher level of luxury and are more spacious. Let's take a look at one of our most popular larger models, the Da Vinci 4 berth.

The luxury family model: Da Vinci 4-berth

This Da Vinci motorhome sleeps 4, with a spacious front living area and large island bed at the rear. There is also a popular and integrated electronic dropdown bed, to make bedtime that much easier. LED lighting as well as lots of natural light throughout provides a clean, modern feel inside this family motorhome.

Other features in the vehicle include Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, cruise control, TV, parking sensors and rear parking camera, and of course an onboard toilet and shower.

Our motorhomes come with fully functioning kitchens and are equipped with all the kitchen items and cooking equipment you need to make meals whilst your holiday, at no extra cost.

This luxury motorhome for a family or group of four can cost £1,100 for a week in October (mid-season), but prices can vary in high season and in the holidays. (Price correct September 2023 but cannot be guaranteed.)

Is campervan hire cheaper?

At the other end of the price scale, our lowest cost vehicle is the Ashton 4-berth VW Campervan. It's perfect for couples or families with one or two children. It has a rock ‘n’ roll seat-bed in the rear and a front elevating roof, giving more space in the living area.

The kitchen comprises lightweight furniture with a worktop, sink with twin-burner hob and fridge freezer. The memory foam sleeping surface on the rear of the seat ensures you get a great night’s sleep and the elevating roof provides a roof bed, making this an ideal choice for families on weekend trips and longer holidays. There's no on-board toilet or shower however.

The Ashton 4-berth can cost £550 to hire for the same week in October (price correct in September 2023 but cannot be guaranteed).

Luxury motorhome for couples

Something a little bit down the size scale is the Como 2-berth manual vehicle, which doesn't scrimp on luxury. This is one of our most popular vehicles, ideal for couples who don't want to compromise on comfort and convenience. It offers high-end style and design, similar to the Da Vinci, in a more compact environment. There's an electronic drop down double bed, and a convertible ¾ bed within the dining area.

There's an on-board shower and toilet, similar to the Da Vinci, and a fully equipped kitchen too.

The hire price for the same week in October can come in at £150 less than the larger Da Vinci. It's not a massive drop, because there's very little between them in the luxury stakes. (Price correct September 2023 but cannot be guaranteed.)

High season versus mid season price

The average price of hiring a motorhome hire will also vary depending on the season: high season and mid season. Freedhome's hire seasons run from April 1 to October 21. Campsite costs also fluctuate depending on the season, with many sites shut during the winter months.

So when you're calculating how much does it cost to hire a campervan or motorhome, remember that the cost of your trip booking will vary depending on the season.

If you’re looking to save money, avoid the school holidays periods if that’s an option for you.

Don't forget campsite costs

When you're adding up the cost of your motorhome holiday, there are other costs you've got to consider in addition to the price of motorhome hire.

Overnight stays at campsites and caravan parks add up over time, and you can estimate you'll pay at least £20 per night at good sites.

Freedhome offers Caravan Club sites membership to its customers, which gives you access to over 2,200 club sites around the UK, as well as 300 additional campsites in Europe.

As mentioned previously, campsites have high season and low season rates per night, with many of them closed during the low season.

Insurance and fuel costs

Insurance is included in the hire prices of our vehicles quoted on our website, but there is an additional EU Travel Cover insurance cost if you are travelling to Europe in one of our vehicles.

UK breakdown cover is also included with our insurance.

When you're renting with us, each vehicle comes with a full tank of fuel. You'll need to return the vehicle to us with a full tank of fuel at the end of your booking.

Additional extras with motorhome hire

Holidays are meant to be fun, so don't forget extra costs of fun activities, like having a night out, eating in restaurants, days at the beach. It can cost money to park in popular tourist spots each day, and the same can apply even if you just want to get away from it all and explore nature.

With some rental companies there’s a payment for optional extras like collision damage waiver, exceeding a mileage allowance or hiring bike racks. With our rentals, bike racks are included for free if you need them, and we don’t impose a mileage allowance.

With Freedhome you can hire bedding from us and outdoor furniture as extras. And there's an extra charge if you'd like to take your pet along on your trip.
