Visit Hadrian's Wall

The construction of Hadrian's Wall began in AD 122 during the rule of Emperor Hadrian. As well as building heavily defended forts throughout the country the Romans built the wal from coast to coast to protect Roman England from Scottish tribes. As wel as the stunning scenery that can be explored in Hadrian's WalI Country by bike, horseback and by foot there is plenty of activities for all the family.

Carlisle Castle

Standing proudly in the city it has dominated for nine centuries, Carlisle Castle was a constantly updated working fortress until well within living memory. Now its rich and varied visitor attractions reflect its long and eventful history. Even before the medieval castle was begun, this site was an important Roman fortress. Today, the castle still plays a prominent role in Cumbria as one of its best-loved landmarks.

Arbeia Roman Fort

Built around AD160, Arbeia Roman Fort once guarded the entrance to the River Tyne, playing an essential role in the mighty frontier system. Based four miles east of the end of Hadrian's Wall at South Shields, the Fort was originally built to house a garrison and soon became the military supply base for the 17 Forts along the Wall.
