Gemany’s Route 500 (otherwise known as the Schwarzwald Hockstrasse) is a sweeping, undulating stretch of road that measures just under 145 miles (233 kilometres). It passes through the iconic Black Forest. This is a driver’s dream – no boring road here!

Route 500 is a dramatic place to drive, with switchbacks aplenty and smooth, sweeping sections of road that look as though they go on forever.
Research is key before starting off on this route. It can get busy – it is a major road, after all – so get your timing right before heading out into the Black Forest and driving through its many little villages and clearings.
For those who are there to enjoy the view, the best trails tend to be to the north of the route, but no matter where you start, or where you intend to end up, you’ll be in some of the most beautiful landscapes around.
Even when driving through the wooded areas, which can be pretty dense, the roadway remains nice and wide, making this a truly enjoyable driving experience.
