5 Great Motorhome Sites for Wild Swimming

If you’re seeking a bit of adventure this summer, why not hire one of our Luxurious Motorhomes/Campervans for the week and try out one of these idyllic wild swimming locations?

Our luxury motorhomes boast fantastic garage space – ideal for storing your wetsuit or dry suit before and after your wild swimming adventure.

Travelling in a motorhome is the ideal way to explore these beautiful wild swimming locations because it gives you an opportunity to linger in these beautiful wild places.  Plus, it doesn’t have to expensive when you rent a motorhome from us.

#1. Lower Ddwli Falls, Breacon Beacons

The Breacon Beacons is South Wales’ biggest mountain range.  The region between the villages of Hirwaun, Ystradfellte, and Pontneddfechan on the southern slopes of the Fforest Fawr massif, west of Merthyr Tydfil, is known as Waterfall Country – Coed-y-Rhaeadr (Wood of the Water) in Welsh.

It is characterised by steep, tree-lined gorges, caves, swallow holes and an abundance of tumbling water.  Trails and hiking routes offer a great way to explore the various waterfalls, but if you want to wild swim, Lower Ddwli Falls is the place to do it.

What’s more, the Brecon Beacons dark skies geopark is now the newest UK dark skies reserve, so you can sit out at night under the stars.

#2. Strathmashie Forest, Highlands

You’re not short of idyllic wild swimming spots in the Scottish Highlands, as long as you’re hardy enough to take to the water.

Strathmashie Forest is popular with walkers because it has a number of short trails suitable for families.  One such trail is the 500m Pattack Walk.  This short loop walk starts at the Druim an Aird car park and takes you to a waterfall viewpoint.  Beneath the waterfall, there is a large, calm pool with a small, pretty beach.  Although it is near the main road, it is a lovely – and very accessible – wild swimming spot.

Close by, the forest offers great facilities for mountain biking at the Laggan Wolftrax MTB Trails and Laggan Wolftrax Centre and Cafe.

#3. Nantcol Waterfalls, Gwynedd

One of the most beautiful campsites you can expect to find, close to the beaches of Harlech, Shell Island and Barmouth, Nantcol Waterfalls sits high above the little village of Llanbedr where the land starts to rise towards the dramatic Rhinog mountains.

The facilities are modern, clean and well-maintained.  And the surroundings are unbeatable.  As the river runs past the main camping area, it broadens out to create a wonderful paddling place in which small children love to splash and play.  From here, you can hear the waterfall roaring down the cliffside 100 metres away.  From the campsite, wander up the hillsides to find a secluded spot up river where you can swim in complete peace, under by the craggy peaks of the Rhinogs.

#4. Ullswater, Lake District

The Lake District is another area that abounds with wild swimming spots.  Kailpot Cragg on the shores of Ullswater is one of the best.

With an exhilarating jump from the cragg into the clear, deep water of Ullswater, this wild swim is thrilling.  It’s particularly memorable in the late afternoon and evening because the crag faces west – making it a great sunset spot.

Take the ferry to Howtown pier and follow the lake path a mile south-west to arrive at the cragg.  From the other direction, the footpath from Howtown to Sandiwick will lead you to Kailpot Bay and the cragg after about a mile.  Be aware you will be sharing the lake with boat traffic, so take care.

#5. Upper Eskdale, Lake District

Another beautiful wild swimming spot in the Lake District is Tongue Pot, near Boot in Upper Eskdale.

Beneath a noisy waterfall framed by dramatic rock faces, the cool, clear waters of Tongue Pot are an enchanting place for a wild swim.   You’ll need to walk two miles upriver from the Woolpack Inn in Boot to arrive at the pool and its pebbly beach, but it is well worth the effort.
