Caravan holidays in Cornwall along the coast have proved particularly popular over the last few years, not least among foreign tourists.

Close to four million foreign tourists spent close to £2 billion on trips along Britain's coastline in 2009, according to research by VisitBritain.

While warm Cornwall is undoubtedly a draw for those keen to book a site near the sea, it was Scotland's coastal destinations that attracted the most tourists.

In excess of one million tourists visited Edinburgh and Glasgow alone in 2009. In the case of the former, many will have been lured by the golf and picturesque scenery at St Andrews.

Co-chair of British Tourism Week Patricia Yates noted: "As we open British Tourism Week with parties on piers across the country, this research reminds us all that visiting one of our great piers at a seaside town offers visitors a quintessential coastal experience which is unique to Britain."
